What Should I Avoid After Tooth Extraction?

If you have recently had a dental extraction or are planning to have one soon, you may wonder about the aftercare process. Dentists perform dental extractions for multiple reasons, such as:

  1. Advanced gum disease
  2. Advanced tooth decay and infection
  3. There are no options left for restorative treatment
  4. Severely damaged teeth
  5. Orthodontic treatment
  6. Problematic wisdom teeth

DENTAL EXTRACTION: AFTERCARE AND RECOVERY

First, the body will do everything necessary to heal itself, which typically starts with coagulation (clotting). Following the extraction, the body will begin the healing process by trying to stop the bleeding by forming a blood clot in the tooth socket. This clot forms to protect the bone and nerve tissue while helping the gums to heal. During this time, it is crucial not to loosen or remove the blood clot. A dislodged clot can result in a dry socket, which exposes the hole in the bone from the extraction site (and is extremely painful). Since we want the blood clot to stay put (to assist in the healing process), here are some guidelines we should follow:

  • Discuss any medications you are taking with Dr. Michael to determine if they could interfere with the clotting process or increase your risk of developing dry socket
  • Avoid using straws until given the green light to do so
  • Consume soft foods until you can chew normally
  • Avoid smoking and tobacco, as it delays healing and encourages infection
  • Keep your head elevated while sleeping for a few days after the procedure
  • Avoid brushing near the extraction site until it has healed
  • Brush very gently and keep your mouth clean
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids
  • Avoid activities, foods, and beverages that could loosen or remove the blood clot
  • Do your best to sleep well, as your body needs time to heal
