Everything You Should Know about Root Canal Treatment

If your Eagan dentist says you need a root canal, you have an infection at the center of your tooth’s root. This can be a painful situation, primarily as the infection spreads.

In many cases, a root infection means a dental emergency visit with our team to relieve pain and swelling through root canal therapy. Root canal therapy relieves your pain and restores your tooth to health.

SIGNS YOU HAVE A ROOT INFECTION

You’ll have a toothache, jaw swelling, and a blister on the gum most of the time. However, in some cases, your dentist finds the emerging infection on an x-ray before symptoms present.

If you notice ongoing tooth sensitivity that does not improve or any swelling, it’s important to contact Dr. Michael as soon as possible. Mild discomfort can elevate throughout the day. And a diagnosis allows us to treat your tooth before it causes significant issues or requires extraction.

ROOT CANAL PROCESS

If you’re diagnosed with a root infection, the goal is to treat the issue as soon as possible to prevent or stop pain and swelling and save your tooth.

Your Eagan dentist numbs the area around the tooth and gently extracts the infected tissues from the canal. We then wash the canal and close it off with a temporary filling material. At a future appointment, typically a week or two later, you come in for a tooth-colored filling or a dental crown.

You’ll often need a dental crown because the previous infection makes the tooth weak and at risk for future breakage. A dental crown is tooth-shaped and always shaded to match your teeth. It absorbs your bite impact to protect your treated tooth.
